What’s going on with Windows 10
Microsoft has announced that Windows 10 will reach end of support on October 14, 2025.
After that date, Microsoft will stop providing security updates, feature updates, or technical support for most editions of Windows 10.
The latest version of Windows 10 (22H2) will be the final “serviced” version of the OS.
For users in the European Economic Area (EEA), Microsoft has offered a free Extended Security Updates (ESU) extension until October 2026 under certain conditions – but these will be few.
For other Windows 10 users, Microsoft will allow users to purchase an annual ESU program extension.
For Microsoft 365 (Office) apps: while security support will continue for a time, Microsoft will stop pushing new features for those apps on Windows 10 starting in mid-to-late 2026.
Are there any risks to not upgrading?
Well, the risks grow over time. Newly discovered security vulnerabilities will no longer be patched, making your machine more exposed to malware, exploits, and attacks.
Software developers may also begin to drop support for Windows 10, meaning newer versions of apps might not run properly or be available at all.
For Microsoft Office / Microsoft 365: security updates will continue for some time, but as noted, new features on Windows 10 will be phased out.
How can Vaughan help?
We can advise you what your options are.
There is a Microsoft tool to see if your current hardware is upgradable.
Alternatively, an ESU provides individuals and organizations of all sizes with the option to extend the use of Windows 10 devices past the end of support date in a more secure manner. Although no new features will be available. Pricing is now available for the ESU program.
